Shows, The Clothes They Stood Up In

The merciless irony of Alan Bennett on the life of a middle-aged couple

The irresistible pair MARIA AMELIA MONTI - PAOLO CALABRESI, will be on at the Ambra Jovinelli Theatre from January 28 to February 7, as star of The Clothes They Stood Up In BY ALAN BENNETT, translation and stage adaptation by EDOARDO ERBA; with NICOLA SORRENTI. Directed by SERENA SINIGAGLIA.
Unexpected encounters are the spice of our lives and thus of the theater, which is the true reflection of life itself (good theater, of course!). In the case of Alan Bennett is a safe bet.
The Clothes They Stood Up In is a text where, with an irony never predictable nor vulgar, Bennett addresses the issue of the relationships between men and women.
He delicately suggests us how difficult it is to love somebody and - above all - to keep alive the passion and the respect. It need two great actors, capable of "lightness" of Italo Calvino, who can touch our emotional chords never becoming rhetorical or trivial. We smile looking at the trouble of Mr. and Mrs. Ransome, but basically we are moved. We all share their need (sometimes grotesque and ironic) to feel alive and happy despite the time inexorably passing ad the boredom of the killing daily routine.
Maria Amelia Monti and Paolo Calabresi are precisely that kind of actors: able to make you smile and move at the same time. Two great actors, with a long experience, working togeter for first time.
It is a very unusual meeting. We come from different routes and different stories. When I realized that they were the two interpreters, I had no doubts. The desidered meeting of diversity is always a source of great discoveries and new possibilities.
Finally I feel stronger and more secure having Edoardo Erba by my side for the translation and adaptation of drama. We had already worked together previously, in perfect mutual agreement. It will be surely a wonderful trip, since it already has allowed these people, so different and "rich", to meet and be able to choose each other.
Serena Sinigaglia
